Conscience as guide to good medical practice

July 3rd, 2009

It is contended that doctors should be able to use their conscience to guide them in making decisions about medical care, especially in respect to abortion. Although every person’s conscience should guide their behaviour, how can we be sure it is a conscience informed by truth or natural law or knowledge of God or good science?
After many centuries science has developed strict rules to help determine what is reality and true. Although medical science has many failings, if properly applied, it can determine what is good for patients in general and a particular patient about whom a clinical decision must be made. So science should be used to determine whether or not a pregnancy should be aborted. It should also be remembered that, the burden of proof rests with those who perform or support any medical procedure to show beyond reasonable doubt it is therapeutic. This has never even been attempted with abortions. There is no evidence that “therapeutic” “induced” abortions as practiced in this country are beneficial to the woman, her family or society.
